Transfer Boxes

We supply the LT 230 geardrive transfer boxes as well as the Borg Warner chain drive transfer boxes as fitted to the RR Classic from 1989 onwards and the P38A or "New Shape RR".

How we rebuild them

When we rebuild a box, the unit is stripped down, washed in both Safety Kleen and hot wash tanks then the casings are shot blasted with glass bead. Once "Prepped" the stripped unit is sent to the build area in a plastic tub.

The LT 230 transfer boxes have a fixed set of new parts including a new cross drilled input gear, taper roller bearings, the centre diff is checked and changed if necessary then shimmed up .Once the new parts are picked the first step in the build process is to lay the parts out on the bench for inspection, the gears are closely inspected paying particular attention to the condition of the dog teeth and the wear pattern on the gear teeth. If they pass inspection they are used again, if not they go in the scrap.

The Borg Warner transfer boxes all have a new genuine chain and rebuilt viscous coupling units are fitted when required, the RR classic ones have a new output shaft and new oil pump also.

Once built the unit is stamped with a number and a spec sheet filled out giving us info on the unit specification, who built it, when it was built and exactly what parts were fitted.

How to order

Should you wish to place an order for a unit you will need to first identify the unit required using the following guidelines then either phone, fax or email us (preferably fax) with your name, phone number, delivery address, what it is that you would like to order and payment details. We aim to dispatch orders within two working days but once the order is received we will contact you to give a delivery date.

When we send a unit out, we charge a core charge which is refunded upon receipt of the old unit assuming it is the same type as supplied and must be complete and not stripped with an intact casing, these core charges vary depending on the type supplied as detailed in the relevant section.

What they arrive with

The Transfer boxes come complete with the propshaft drive flanges but you will need to swap over the handbrake assembly, dowels (to mainbox) and the speedo drive as this varies with the tyre size you have fitted. You will also need to retain the speed sensor fitted to the P38A unit.

Identifying your Unit

The LT 230 was fitted to all 5 speed Defenders, all Discos and the RR Classic upto 1988. The serial number will be stamped in one of 2 possible places, either on the bottom left of the main casing or on the earlier vehicles right at the bottom of the left hand side face of the main casing obscured by the exhaust pipe in which case you will need a knife (to scrape the muck off) and a mirror. You are looking for Eg. "28D123456E, we are interested in the first two and the last, i.e. we call this a "28E". Click here to see where these number are. Please have a look in the LT 230 Technical Section to find a list of Serial numbers / Ratios.

The Borg Warner serial number is printed on a plate at the bottom middle of the rear face. The numbers will look like this – Model No: 13-61-005. The numbers and letters after the model number will vary from type to type so we will need to know all the numbers or letters shown.
